WHO WE ARE
Learn to Surf Maui was borne from the desire to share the surfing experience with others. We love the ocean and respect the sport. When the opportunity came to start a school we envisioned helping our island visitors experience to power of surfing. It’s an exhilarating experience and the benefit of taking a lesson keeps you safe in the water, highlights surfing etiquette, and a great way to enjoy the ocean in an eco sensitive manner.
We’re not a big company, famous surfers, or rich trust funders doing this for “fun”. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have the honor of showing island visitors some Aloha and sharing the thrill of surfing. What a great way to make a living!

If you’re coming to visit here on Maui – You will definitely want to snorkel by kayak. A great value and good for the soul. Getting out on the water by kayak is beautifully simple. No engines, no fumes and were right there on the water.

Garret was amazing. This was such an amazing trip. We saw lots of whales breaching in the distance. Flying fish. The weather was perfect. calm waters, sunny and basically a private tour with 7 family members. And just when we thought the trip couldnt get any better, a baby whale surfaced and made its way toward us as we stood still watching him approach. We were so amazed (and thrilled) that this curious little guy was checking out each of our kayaks. The mom was just beneath us as was a very large third escort whale not far off. It was AMAZING!! I took a photo with my underwater camera from the kayak, submerged and snapped a photo as the baby whale was passing (see photo post).
We will never forget this. Garret was such a great guide, knowledgable, and very respectful of the sea. Thanks so much. See you again!! Cheers from all of us.

Went on an early morning trip with our guide Steve and had a fantastic time exploring beautiful Maui. Extremely professional and informative, Steve was quick to point out all the interesting features of the landscape and the many creatures below, introducing us to a variety of reef fish, an eel, an octopus, several large turtles and other crustaceans. He even managed to rescue a local snorkeler who became disabled with a leg cramp around our dive site and brought him into shore without even disrupting the tour! A great guy and a great experience overall, would highly recommend SPK while in Maui!

We set up a kayak trip with SPK and arrived and was immediately greeted by our guide Dan. The next 3 hours was the most amazing experience of our entire trip. Dan was personable, knowledgable and very informative. He took us to the best reefs and my 10 year old daughter was amazed from start to finish. I would highly recommend this company and can’t wait to return and book them again…..and hope we get Dan as our guide!

I highly recommend a kayak tour with this company! We booked the Pali Cliffs tour and went out with Adam, but the wind kicked up and we had to come in early. Adam suggested asking his boss if we could do an additional tour. We were able to easily join another tour a few days later, this time with Steve, and had an incredible whale watching and snorkeling experience. If you have some flexibility with booking, I recommend calling the company to ask about the best day and location based on weather/wind conditions, rather than just booking whatever sounds best online. Also keep in mind that if you are seeking a controlled, entirely predictable experience, then a kayak tour probably isn’t for you because nature will do what it wants. But if you want a hands-on ocean experience, absolutely book this tour!

FAQs
I'm a total beginner… is this ok?
This is why we are here – you are very welcome.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Recommend booking at least a week out, however, we usually have space inside of a week
What should I bring / leave behind? wear?
Bring sunscreen and a beach towel. Arrive to get wet as many locations do not have change rooms. Leave behind valuables (rings, watches, necklaces,,, anything loose to your person.
I dont swim, is this ok?
Please think carefully about this – you are welcome to join us however, please have a high comfort level in the water.

Whats your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel, please do so outside of 48 hours prior to your activity for a full refund.
Is this hard?
Not at all – a little listening ans watching goes a long way. We go through beach instruction going over all the required steps to be safe and have fun.
I have some physical limitations, should I try?
Required strong back, and upper body. Not recommended for someone with back problems or lacking general agility
Are their restrooms / bathrooms / changerooms here? Showers?
Kalama Park has public restrooms. Recommend using the restroom prior to joining.
I took lessons years ago, should I rent or take another lesson?
While we would recommend a lesson to refresh your memory and ensure you are safe.
Why no afternoon times?
Trade winds typically come up in the late morning and add difficulty to the activity.
How long is the lesson / class?
These are tow (2) hours long with about 75% in the water
Group versus private lessons?
Group lessons will have up to six (6) unrelated guests in a class with an instructor. A private lesson will be your group with an instructor to yourselves.
Can we come at a different time?
We can sometimes accommodate special timing with private lessons. Please note however, that the early morning times are ideal for conditions. If you’re request spans two (2) lessons times, it will of course be at a premium.
Can we “share” a lesson?
Unfortunately not. Each individual needs to have purchased a lesson
Can we do half surfing and half SUP in one lesson?
Timing really does not allow for this. You will not get enough time in either Surf or SUP lesson
Can we wait until morning and see what the weather is like?
We plan our resources well in advance so last minute “lets change to tomorrow” does not work unfortunately.
What type of boards do you use (surfboards and Stand up paddle boards)?
Our surfboards are made specifically for beginners “Softops”, as are our standup paddle boards.

We have a 48 hour cancellation policy. Cancellations made outside the 48 hours outside of your activity time will be fully refunded. No exceptions.
